How the Youth Leadership Program Builds Confidence, Communication, and Leadership Skills

What if just a few hours each week could help young people become more confident speakers, stronger leaders, and better communicators?
NEW YOUTH LEADERSHIP CHAIR, JASON COPELAND youthleadership@tmd55.org
The Youth Leadership Program is designed to do exactly that. Created for teens ages 14 to 18, this engaging workshop series provides a supportive environment where participants can develop essential communication and leadership skills through hands-on experience.
Core Curriculum Learning Objectives
Participants learn by doing, filling different meeting roles each week under adult mentorship:
1. Public Speaking: Prepare and present short formal speeches.
2. Impromptu Speaking: Participate in Table Topics and learn how to think and speak on their feet.
3. Constructive Feedback: Learn to give and receive positive, supportive peer evaluations.
4. Leadership and Parliamentary Procedure: Run meetings, elect student officers (President, Vice President, Secretary), and practice basic meeting leadership.
Ready to help young people discover their confidence and leadership potential?
Coordinating a Youth Leadership Program is a chance to watch students grow from hesitant speakers into confident communicators. Getting started is simple: explore the Youth Leadership Program Workbook and Youth Leadership Coordinator's Guide, then share your interest with our Youth Leadership Chair, Jason Copeland. With a little preparation, enthusiasm, and a passion for encouraging others, you can help create an experience that is fun, memorable, and genuinely life-changing for the young leaders who participate.
“Imagine if every child had people applauding them when they stood up to give a speech, and applauded them afterward. Then perhaps they wouldn’t be so afraid of speaking in public.”
—Maureen McBeath, DTM
