District 55 currently provides support for a Youth Leadership Program (YLP) at Northside Independent School District in San Antonio. This year we have requests from nine NISD high schools that are conducting a total of nineteen classes.
We are currently seeking volunteers to fill a variety of time slots starting in late September through early November. Volunteers receive credit for conducting a Youth Leadership Program (YLP) upon completion of the 8-week (1 hour) programs.
Volunteers conduct a regular Toastmaster meeting as the Toastmaster of the Day for a 45- minute class that includes: 2 speakers, three Table Topics and 2 evaluators. The teacher at each school prepares the agendas, chooses the Theme of the Day and assigns all roles except TMOD. The TMOD provides feedback to speakers who are members of the Gifted and Talented Program’s Independent Study and Mentoring course. Students must prepare a 45-minute presentation that they will present at the end of the school year (April 2020).
Northside ISD encompasses the area of Northwest San Antonio between Loop 410, Loop 1604 and I-10 and Hwy 90. The days of the week are somewhat flexible, but have to be arranged with the individual teachers at each school. If you are interested in helping and getting YLP credit towards a Pathways DTM, please reach out to Coordinator Melissa Moran.
